PDGF-AB is a heterodimer formed by PDGFA and PDGFB, which belongs to the platelet-derived growth factor family. Besides PDGF-AB, there are four disulfide-linked homodimers (PDGF-AA, -BB, -CC, and -DD) in the PDGF family. PDGF proteins mediate diverse cellular functions by binding to and inducing the homo- or hetero-dimerization of two receptors (PDGF R alpha and R beta). PDGF proteins are potent mitogens for connective tissue cells, including dermal fibroblasts, glial cells, arterial smooth muscle cells and some epithelial and endothelial cells. PDGF seems to be ubiquitous in neurons throughout the CNS, where it is predicted to play a key role in neuron survival and regeneration, and in the regulation of glial cell proliferation and differentiation. Furthermore, PDGF is chemotactic for fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, neutrophils and mononuclear cells.
