Glypican 1 is a member of the family of GPI-linked proteoglycans. GPC1 is expressed by neurons, smooth and skeletal muscle cells, keratinocytes, osteoblasts, Schwann cells, immature dendritic cells, and tumor, tumor-associated vascular endothelial cells. The function of GPC1 is complex and varied. GPC1 has been shown to interact with SLIT2. This protein plays a role in the misfolding of normal prion proteins in the cell membrane to the infectious prion form. As a proteoglycan, it appears to make use of its HS adduct to impact select growth factor activity.
