CD39 is a B lymphocyte cell surface marker that belongs to the GDA1/CD39 NTPase family. It is expressed predominately on activated lymphoid cells and can also be found in endothelial tissues. In the nervous system, CD39 hydrolyzes ATP and other nucleotides to regulate purinergic neurotransmission. It is associated with the prevention of platelet aggregation by hydrolyzing platelet-activating ADP to AMP. CD39 transgenic mice showed impaired platelet aggregation, prolonged bleeding times, and resistance to systemic thromboembolism.
