B cell antigen receptor complex-associated protein alpha-chain (CD79A) is a single-pass type I membrane protein that belongs to the Ig-superfamily. CD79A is expressed on B cells and can form a covalent heterodimer with CD79B. CD79A is required in cooperation with CD79B for initiation of the signal transduction cascade activated by binding of antigen to the B-cell antigen receptor complex which leads to internalization of the complex, trafficking to late endosomes, and antigen presentation. CD79A is also essential for the differentiation of pre-B cells, and the pre-BCR regulates the surface expression of IL-7R.
