Angiopoietin-related protein 4 (ANGPTL4) is a secreted protein that shares structural homology with angiopoietins. ANGPTL4 is highly expressed in adipose tissues. It is up-regulated in endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes during hypoxia. ANGPTL4 contains an N-terminal coiled-coil region that facilitates covalent homo-oligomerization as well as a C-terminal fibrinogen-like domain. The homo-oligomer undergoes proteolytic processing and releases its C-terminal domain, which circulates as a monomer. ANGPTL4 participates in the regulation of lipid and glucose metabolism. ANGPTL4 may also act as a regulator of angiogenesis and modulate tumorigenesis.
