Spz1, a bHLH-zip protein, acts as a proto-oncogene regulated by a MAPK signaling pathway that can increase cell proliferation and tumorigenic activity as well as leading to primary tumor formation (15899793). It is expressed specifically in the testis and epididymis (11165476). Spz1 is a specific binding partner of the gamma2 catalytic subunit of Phosphatase-1c-gamma (PP1c-gamma). The interaction between Spz1 and PP1cgamma2 may be required for proper regulation of spermatogenesis and fertility in males.
