p50 (KBF1, p105, EBP-1, NF-kB1, NFKB-p50, NFkappaB, NF-kappaB, NFKB-p105, NF-kappa-B) family of transcription factors plays important roles in various biological processes including apoptosis, stress response, immunity, and inflammation. Activation of p50 regulates the expression of inflammatory genes crucially involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. It governs the expression of adhesion molecules that play a pivotal role in leukocyte-endothelium interactions. p50 activation plays an essential role in the activation of mesangial cells and macrophages through the transcriptional induction of inflammatory mediators of glomerular inflammation and injury.

Subcellular location: Nucleus, Cytoplasm
Post transnational modification: The covalent modification of cysteine by 15-deoxy-Delta12,14-prostaglandin-J2 is autocatalytic and reversible. It may occur as an alternative to other cysteine modifications, such as S-nitrosylation and S-palmitoylation.
