Specificity: Anti-Giardia lamblia (Clone GIAR-4849) is specific for the 65 kDa Giardia antigen of the cyst form of the parasite.
Background: Giardia, one of the most common waterborne pathogens worldwide, is a microscopic protozoan parasite that causes giardiasis, a gastrointestinal illness in humans and animals. The parasite exists in two forms: a motile, infective form called a cyst, and a non-motile, replicative form called a trophozoite. Transmission occurs through the ingestion of cysts, which can be found in contaminated water, food, or by direct contact with infected individuals or animals. Once ingested, the cysts transform into trophozoites in the small intestine, where they attach to the intestinal lining and can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, bloating, and nausea. Giardiasis is especially concerning in settings with poor sanitation and water quality, and it can lead to malabsorption and chronic infection in some cases. Proper hygiene, water treatment, and personal preventive measures are essential to reduce the transmission of Giardia and the impact of giardiasis on public health.
